McClellan Gets To Be Himself...

Former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan's memoirs were previewed by the Washington Post.  Regarding the Iraq war:

"Over that summer of 2002," he writes, "top Bush aides had outlined a strategy for carefully orchestrating the coming campaign to aggressively sell the war. . . . In the permanent campaign era, it was all about manipulating sources of public opinion to the president's advantage."

McClellan, once a staunch defender of the war from the podium, comes to a stark conclusion, writing, "What I do know is that war should only be waged when necessary, and the Iraq war was not necessary."

When an administration insider calls the war a mistake, it seems pretty clear that it was one.

...why didn't he say so earlier then?...

i mean, you gotta question of timing and why he chose this form of media to say everything. the 180 twist seems a little sketchy for me.

As press secretary of the administration he couldn't possibly criticize the administration publicly; it was his job to say what the administration desired to be said. Memoirs published after retiring from the White House would serve as a medium to say what he actually thought the whole time.

how ironic that the scrolling ad i now see on your blog is a johnmccain.com advertisement. like obama, i remember saying this back in 2003, the war was a bad idea. and call me a spendthrift, but there are very few reasons i would send troops out anywhere.
